Baby Brownie camera image

This camera consists of two pieces (parts A and B) which fit together to form a roughly cubical box. Both pieces are made of heavy dark brown Bakelite plastic. One of the sides of the box has a peephole of red tinted glass about 1.5 CM in diameter (for viewing the film inside the camera). The opposite side has the opening for the lens (through which the light shines on the film), which is an embedded and slightly raised circle of clear glass about 1 CM in diameter. Engraved letters around the lens read “BABY BROWNIE SPECIAL.” The top surface has the viewfinder, which consists of a tiny rectangle of glass and a small passageway shaped like a tapering rectangle that crosses the top of the camera. It is narrowest on the end through which the photographer looks. Also on the top, and next to the viewfinder, is a circular film-advance knob made of white plastic. The whole camera is designed with curved corners and edges in an Art Deco style.

The following is engraved on the inside of the camera: “USE 127 FILM / U. S. PATENTS 2,027,000 / 2, 029,918 / DES. 113.220 (?) / PATENTS PENDING.” There is also an engraved Eastman Kodak company logo on the outside back surface.  ("DES" probably represents the design patent.)

The camera case (part C) is also cubical, and is made of reddish finished leather stitched together with string. It has a simple closure, consisting of a flap that folds into a crossing slot. The case has a nonremovable, adjustable shoulder strap.

According to the sources below, this brand of camera was made by Eastman Kodak starting in 1934, and during and after the war years.
